Cuffe welcomes deferment of provisional licence rules

Issued: 28 October 2007

Statement by Ciarán Cuffe

Green Transport Spokesperson supports the Minister's sensible approach

Green Party Transport Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD has welcomed the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey's announcement that he has deferred the introduction of new rules for provisional drivers until 30 June 2008.

Deputy Cuffe said: "The Minister has shown a very sensible approach to this issue I am fully supportive of the new road safety strategy. The longer lead-in time for these regulations will enable provisional drivers who use their cars to commute to work to make alternative arrangements. Coupled with the improving reduction in test waiting times, this will hopefully ensure a smoother transition to the permit scheme."
