Greens call for spirit of cooperation to save Assembly

Issued: 27 January 2010

MLA warns that zero sum strategy will lead to collapse

The Green Party Assembly Member Brian Wilson said that it was disappointing but not surprising that talks on policing and justice between the DUP, Sinn Féin and the British and Irish governments ended today without resolution.

Mr. Wilson said: "It highlights the problem that has existed in the Assembly for the past year that the spirit of cooperation and partnership does not exist. There is no willingness to seek agreement and every issue is reduced to a zero sum issue, which creates winners and losers and increases divisions.

"The Assembly was established on the basis of consensus and compromise which leaves everyone a winner. If a spirit of cooperation does not prevail the Assembly has no future,” he said.
