Sargent pays tribute to Yasser Arafat
Green Party Leader, Trevor Sargent TD, said today that Yasser Arafat (Mohammed Yasser Abdul-Ra'ouf Qudwa Al-Husseini) would always be remembered as a symbol of the Palestinian people, a symbol of unity, and steadfastness in their struggle for international recognition as an independent state.
?Yasser Arafat tirelessly campaigned and he will always be remembered for his dedication and resilience. Throughout his years of uprising, peace and negotiation the Palestinian leader has been an enduring national symbol.?
?It was obvious that something was seriously wrong when Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon speedily facilitated Mr. Arafat?s exit out of the country when he had previously suggested that he would be exiled from the West Bank if he left.?
?While he made many mistakes during his reign, over the last two and half years he has been barricaded into a few buildings in Ramallah while still expected to engage in a intricate and sensitive peace process.?
?One of his favourite sayings was ?the mountain cannot be shaken by the wind?.
