Marine
Introduction
It is generally accepted now that as an island nation we have failed to take seriously the socio-economic opportunities presented to us by the seas around us. The Green Party?s policy is informed by a commitment to mainstreaming environmental considerations into all policies that impact on the marine and freshwater environment, a commitment to the precautionary principle to balance the pursuit of profit, and compliance with our international and national commitments to sustainable marine development.
Some key points:
- End the dumping of fish i.e. discards
- Sustainable employment for fishing communities
- A licensing system to support sustainable fishing methods
- Stronger penalties for illegal fishing
- Marine protected areas for the Irish coastline
