Mary White TD has welcomed a 9.2% cut in CO2 emisisons across Oireachtas buildings in the first six months of this year.
Deputy White said: "This is a very welcome outcome and sets an example to other businesses and places of work, who wish to cut costs by saving energy. The cut could not have been achieved without buy-in from staff working across Leinster House and the Oireachtas, who attended meetings and volunteered as energy officers to ensure simple measures were being carried out to save energy.
"Changes included switching off computer screens during lunch time, turning off all appliances such as photo-copiers, printers and TVs when not in use and ensuring no lights were left on unnecessarily."
The energy-saving programme was carried out in conjunction with the Office of Public Works and is part of a national strategy to help combat climate change. "The Greens in Government will continue to push for changes to how we use energy, not only in our place of work in the Oireachtas, but across all homes, places of work and public buildings. We need to continue our cut in carbon emissions if we are to have any chance in combating climate change," concluded Deputy White.
