Green Party Deputy Leader reiterates call to declare a national day of remembrance for those who have suffered abuse in this country

Green Party Deputy Leader Mary White TD has re-iterated her call on the Government to declare a national day of remembrance for those who have suffered abuse in this country.

Speaking following the presentation of a report from the Commission of Investigation into Child Sexual Abuse dealing with the Dublin Archdiocese to the Minister for Justice yesterday Deputy White said: “The last few months have seen much public scrutiny and debate on the level of sexual abuse perpetrated by those within religious institutions against young people in this country.

“The Ryan Report was a watershed, and the latest report into child sexual abuse dealing with the Dublin archdiocese will, no doubt, illustrate the horrific cases of abuse in Dublin over many years. I re-iterate my call on the Government to declare a day of remembrance for all victims of abuse. A national day would give the country an opportunity to reflect on this tragedy, the pursuit of justice for those who suffered, and for us all to reflect on the lessons we as a nation must learn from these tragic events.”
