De Burca flattered by Fine Gael imitation

Issued: 28 April 2009

Statement by Deirdre de Burca

First website, now posters;are Fine Gael short on ideas, asks de Burca?

Green Party MEP candidate for Dublin Senator Deirdre de Burca said she was flattered by the imitation of her poster campaign by Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness in an advert in today's Farming supplement of the Irish Independent. "Fine Gael obviously like my style," she said.

The advert features Ms McGuiness in a similar pose and clothing as the campaign posters launched by Senator De Burca on 23 March.

Senator de Burca said: “I’m quite flattered that Fine Gael has decided to use a similar poster campaign to my own. The Green Party always advocates reusing and recycling where possible – so I commend their decision to imitate my work. Of course, we’ve been witnessing much imitation from Fine Gael in recent times, most notably in the area of energy policy, but if we arrive at the same end, I’m not going to question the means.”

Controversy arose recently over the launch of Fine Gael's new website, which was very obviously inspired by the BBC's website. The Party was forced to backtrack after bloggers discovered that part of the website’s code had been copied and pasted from the BBC.
