Town Councillor for Ardee Town Council

Biography

Mary has been a teacher in the Community School in Ardee for the last 30 years. She has had a long and friendly connection with many families in the Mid-Louth area and has encouraged the integration and involvement of young people in many community art projects.
She is married to Pat Kavanagh and they have four grown children.

She first came to the public attention in 1994 when she and three others from around County Louth, took a court action against British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL), to seek an end to reprocessing at Sellafield. During the 10 years of the court action, Mary and her colleagues kept the issue of the Sellafield threat to the fore and eventually forced the Irish Government to become pro-actively opposed to the Sellafield nuclear project.

Mary's Main Concerns:

  • Improved Community amenities and activities for all residents in small communities throughout Mid-Louth.
  • Mary will work to provide facilities for minimizing waste and maximizing recycling to phase out landfill and the threat of incineration.
  • Rural network of traffic free, safe and pleasant walking and cycling ways as they have in Germany and Holland. Protection of our natural and built environment.
  • Encourage sustainable development and create jobs to expand and enhance our community.
