Budget 2020 treats cycling as a mere token investment – Greens

Reacting to Budget 2020, Green Party Transport Spokesperson Patrick Costello said:

“The allocation for cycling of just €9m in Budget 2020 is really pitiful.

“The government really haven’t grasped the value of cycling. It is a key way we will lower our carbon emissions in transport, it could radically improve our towns and cities making them more liveable, and it has huge public health benefit.

“Yet here we are in 2019 investing less in cycling now – €9m – than we did in 2015 – €19m.

“Just to put this in context, Amsterdam have committed to a five year spend on cycling infrastructure of €354m. And if we were to put €9m into the roads budget it would get you just 300 meters of motorway.

“We need to be allocating 20% of the transport budget to cycling and walking. This kind of investment would encourage people out of cars and dramatically improve our emissions, our air, our health as well as our public spaces.”
