We NEED to reduce our plastic waste. According to the UN, 8 million tonnes of plastic leak into oceans each year. This is equivalent to dumping a truck of plastic into the sea every minute. Up to 99% of seabirds have ingested plastic! You can see the build up of plastic everywhere, especially on our beaches.
NUIG study found 73% of deep sea fish had ingested plastic
However, there are ways of tackling this waste. Our Waste Reduction Bill, which is before a committee in the Dáil, seeks to introduce a deposit refund scheme on drinks containers, and ban single-use plastics, like disposable plastic cutlery and non-compostable coffee cups. We predict that if passed this would have a massive impact on the amount of plastic waste produced in Ireland.
It is now predicted that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish!
What you can do
While we have got our Waste Reduction Bill this far, it is always in serious threat of being shelved, delayed or watered down. We need you to keep up the pressure and make sure we get it over the line.
- The members of the committee need to know how serious Irish people are about reducing waste. You can do that now be signing this petition
- Write to/Email your TD to ask them to support the bill.
