Children first not business first: Greens

Reacting to the news that a crèche owner at the centre of the Primetime Investigates documentary is to step down from front line services, Cllr. Pauline O’Reilly, Greens Spokesperson for Children said:

“The State and in particular Tusla has let these children down and must take responsibility for a long history of regulatory failures.

“The treatment of children as young as 3 months at the hands of the owners of the crèche is difficult to watch, however the State must take ultimate responsibility.

“Tusla is clearly failing to safeguard children and while the vast majority of owners are compassionate and good at their jobs, we must now move to a system of public childcare not childcare as an industry if as a nation we are to put children first.

“Minister Katherine Zappone continues to pour money in to private business for the care of our children in order to bring the cost down, but this takes control for a public service away from the State. The government is making a mistake.”
