Claire Byrne selected as Green Party Candidate for Dublin Bay South byelection

BACK

Claire Byrne has been selected as the Green Party candidate in the Dublin Bay South byelection, following a vote by Party members in the constituency. Byrne has served as a Green Party Councillor since 2014, and received the highest share of first preference votes in Dublin’s South East Inner City in 2019.

The Green Party has welcomed Cllr Byrnes’ selection as evidence of the Party’s constitutional mandate to fight for gender parity in politics and achieve an equal Ireland for every woman, particularly in Dublin Bay South, which currently has no women TDs. The Party has worked to promote gender equality in its representation and address the five Cs that hold women back in politics – Culture, Confidence, Cash, Childcare and Candidate Selection – running the highest percentage of female candidates in any party running in every constituency in 2020.

Thanking the Party members of Dublin Bay South for their support, Cllr Byrne commented;

“As a Councillor I have been working hard over the last seven years, particularly in the areas of climate action, arts and culture, waste, active travel, community development and housing.  As a TD for Dublin Bay South I will continue that work with a strong focus on climate, communities, and equality.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to set our country on a greener path that will benefit our communities, families and children and to achieve many of the goals we’ve been working towards for the past 40 years. We’ve already seen what the Green Party in Government can achieve. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with our colleagues to accomplish not only the Green commitments in the Programme for Government, but the principles that our Party was founded on. These principles are the very reason I am involved in politics: planning for the long-term, protecting our island’s natural beauty, and safeguarding our planet for future generations.”

Party leader and Dublin Bay South TD Eamon Ryan congratulated Cllr Bryne, saying it was a reflection of the Green Party’s strength and diversity to have such a strong candidate running in Dublin Bay South.

“We now have a real opportunity to reinvent and rebuild Dublin after Covid as a greener more liveable city, that prioritises housing, high quality transport, access to public spaces and a vibrant and diverse cultural life. The Green party is already delivering on this agenda in government and the election of Claire will strengthen our capacity to serve the people of Dublin Bay South.

“Claire has a track record on Dublin City council, and the experience and determination to succeed. I’m looking forward to an energetic campaign where we can engage with the public on our vision for our capital as a great place to live.”

Deputy Party Leader Catherine Martin TD also congratulated Cllr Byrne on her selection, and the importance of equal representation in Irish politics.

“I’m delighted to see such an experienced and hardworking candidate selected to represent the Green Party in the Dublin Bay South by-election. We need to see more women elected to our national parliament. Less than a quarter of our current TDs are women, and Dublin Bay South currently has no female TDs at all.

“The Green Party is committed to fighting for gender parity in politics and an equal Ireland for every woman, and we are all rallying behind Claire in the upcoming campaign.

“I’d also like to extend my commiserations to Hazel. Today’s result is only a postponement of their success.”

Green Party Director of Elections for Dublin Bay South, Roderic O’Gorman TD, congratulated Cllr Byrne on her selection;

“I want to offer my congratulations to Claire on her selection. I’m delighted to see such a strong candidate run in a byelection that will send a strong signal on what government priorities must be over the coming years.

“The Green Party is delivering climate action, social justice, and more liveable towns and cities, and we’ll be seeking the voters’ backing for this vision – just as they did in this constituency last year.”

Claire Byrne roghnaithe mar Iarrthóir an Chomhaontais Ghlais d’fhothoghchán Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas

Roghnaíodh Claire Byrne mar iarrthóir an Chomhaontais Ghlais d’fhothoghchán Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas, tar éis do bhaill an Chomhaontais sa toghcheantar vóta a chaitheamh. Tá Byrne ina comhairleoir de chuid an Chomhaontais Ghlais ó 2014 i leith, agus fuair sí an sciar ab airde de vótaí céadrogha i Lárchathair Bhaile Átha Cliath Thoir Theas in 2019.

Chuir an Comhaontas Glas fáilte roimh roghnú an Chomhairleora Byrne mar fhianaise ar shainordú bunreachtúil an Chomhaontais chun troid ar son na paireachta inscne sa pholaitíocht agus comhionannas a bhaint amach do na mná ar fad in Éirinn, go háirithe i gCuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas, nach bhfuil aon TD mná ann faoi láthair. D’oibrigh an Comhaontas chun paireacht inscne a chur chun cinn i measc a ionadaithe agus chun dul i ngleic leis na cúig rud a choinníonn mná siar sa pholaitíocht: Cultúr, Muinín, Airgead, Cúram Leanaí agus Roghnú na nIarrthóirí. Bhí céatadán iarrthóirí mná ní b’airde aige ná aon pháirtí eile a sheas i ngach toghcheantar in 2020.

Agus buíochas á ghabháil aici le baill an Chomhaontais i gCuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas as a gcuid tacaíochta, dúirt an Cllr Clare Byrne;

“Tá a lán oibre déanta agam le seacht mbliana anuas agus mé i mo Chomhairleoir, go háirithe maidir leis an t-athrú aeráide, na healaíona agus cultúr, dramhaíl, taisteal gníomhach, forbairt pobail agus an tithíocht. Agus me i mo Theachta Dála, leanfaidh mé den obair sin le fócas láidir ar aeráid, pobail agus comhionannas.

“Tá deis againn anois nach mbíonn againn ach uair amháin i nglúin chun conair níos glaise a leagan amach dár dtír, agus chun go leor de na spriocanna a rabhamar ag díriú orthu le 40 bliain anuas a bhaint amach. Chonaiceamar cheana féin an méid is féidir leis an gComhaontas Glas a bhaint amach agus é sa Rialtas. Táim ag súil go mbeidh an deis agam ag obair lenár gcomhghleacaithe chun ár ngealltanais Ghlasa i gClár an Rialtais a bhaint amach, agus oibreoidh mé chun bunphrionsabail an Chomhaontais a chur i bhfeidhm. Chuaigh mé leis an bpolaitíocht mar gheall ar na prionsabail sin: pleanáil fhadtéarmach don todhchaí, áilleacht nádúrtha ár n-oileáin a chosaint, agus an domhan a chosaint ar mhaith leis na glúnta amach romhainn.”

Rinne Ceannaire an Chomhaontais agus TD Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas Éamon Ryan comhghairdeas leis an gComhairleoir Byrne, agus dúirt sé gur léiriú ar neart agus ar éagsúlacht an Chomhaontais Ghlais é iarrthóir chomh láidir sin a bheith ag seasamh don Chomhaontas i gCuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas.

“Agus deireadh ré an choróinvíris romhainn, tá fíordheis againn anois Baile Átha Cliath a athmhúnlú agus a atógáil mar chathair níos glaise agus níos taitneamhaí mar áit chónaithe; áit a mbeidh an tithíocht, córas iompair ardchaighdeáin, spásanna poiblí a bheith ar fáil agus saol cultúir beoga ilghnéitheach mar thosaíochtaí. Tá an clár oibre seo á chur i bhfeidhm ag an gComhaontas Glas cheana féin sa rialtas, agus má thoghtar Claire, treiseofar an cumas atá againn freastal ar mhuintir Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas.

“Tá teist ar Claire ar Chomhairle Cathrach Bhaile Átha Cliath, agus tá an taithí agus an dúthracht chuí aici le go n-éireoidh léi. Tá mé ag súil go mór le feachtas fuinniúil ina féidir linn dul i gcion ar an bpobal lenár bhfís den Athchathair mar áit iontach chónaithe.”

Rinne Leas-Cheannaire an Chomhaontais Ghlais, Catherine Martin TD, comhghairdeas leis an gComhairleoir Byrne freisin as í a bheith roghnaithe agus as an tábhacht a bhaineann le hionadaíocht chomhionann sa pholaitíocht in Éirinn.

“Tá ríméad orm a fheiceáil gur roghnaíodh iarrthóir chomh cleachta díograiseach ar son an Chomhaontais Ghlais i bhfothoghchán Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas. Ní mór dúinn mar thír tuilleadh ban a thoghadh chun Oireachtas Éireann. Tá níos lú ná an ceathrú cuid de na Teachtaí Dála atá ann faoi láthair ina mná, agus níl bean ar bith ina Teachta Dála i gCuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas faoi láthair.

“Tá an Comhaontas Glas tiomanta troid ar son comhionannas inscne sa pholaitíocht chun go mbainfear amach cothrom na Féinne do gach aon bhean in Éirinn, agus beimid uile ag seasamh gualainn ar ghualainn le Claire san fheachtas atá romhainn.

“Ba mhaith liom comhbhrón a dhéanamh le Hazel chomh maith; is sár-iarrthóir í agus beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach.”

Thréaslaigh Stiúrthóir Toghchán Chuan Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas, Roderic O’Gorman TD, a roghnúchán leis an Cllr Byrne;

“Ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a dhéanamh le Claire faoi bheith roghnaithe. Tá ríméad orm a fheiceáil go mbeidh a leithéid d’iarrthóir láidir ag seasamh san fhothoghchán seo, agus is comhartha ríshoiléir é sin ar na tosaíochtaí a bheidh ag an Rialtas sna blianta atá amach romhainn.

“Tá an Comhaontas Glas ag gníomhú go leanúnach ar son na haeráide, an cheartais aeráide agus chun bailte agus cathracha ar áiteanna cónaithe níos fearr iad a fhorbairt, agus beimid ag iarraidh tacaíocht na vótálaithe a fháil don fhís seo – tacaíocht a tugadh go fial dúinn sa dáilcheantar seo anuraidh.”
