Crisis in Afghanistan a ‘day of shame’ for international community – Senator Martin

BACK

Responding to the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Senator Vincent P. Martin said;

“It is a day of shame for the foreign policy of the international community. People have been left abandoned largely as a result of a hugely flawed foreign policy crafted by former President Trump and implemented by President Biden. It is difficult to fathom how the combined forces of the military allies on the ground in Afghanistan did not see this coming.

“I am deeply concerned for the welfare of so many Afghans who face a very unsafe future and in particular  worried about the lives, liberty and safety of girls and women in Afghanistan. The Green Party condemns and abhors all attacks and human rights abuses including those targeted against women and girls. All parties are subject to and must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law.”

Senator Martin welcomed the Government’s announcement of an allocation of up to 150 refugee settlement places under the Irish Refugee Protection Programme which is in addition to 45 visas already approved in recent days. He also welcomed the decision by the Department of Justice to suspend deportation orders to Afghanistan.

Senator Martin has written to Minister Simon Coveney urging the Irish Government to use its influence as a member of the UN Security Council to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms and to provide a safe refuge to all during this unprecedented crisis.
