Dáil Éireann should retain a consensus approach on the Brexit border issue, says Ryan

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan TD said today: “Dáil Éireann should maintain a consensus approach to the Irish border issue, as the Brexit process moves into crisis mode. That approach has helped focus the Irish and European position and should not be abandoned as things risk going over the edge.

“A no deal Brexit would have real implications for our border. We would have to sit down with our European colleagues and work out a way of managing the border in a way which both respects EU market rules and also the unique political circumstances on this island.

“The Government should not deny the reality of having to manage the border but at the same time should not be immediately drawn into such negotiations today. Doing so might only serve those looking for the hardest possible Brexit.

“It is worrying that the British Prime Minister still seems to be seeking a resolution to her impasse by trying to satisfy the hard Brexit faction within her own party. We will have to rely on the wider UK Parliament to avoid the crash out scenario which that minority within her party seem willing to entertain.

“While we have no control over what happens the House of Commons we do have a real choice on our position here at home.  The Green Party is working to maintain the consensus approach within the Oireachtas and is in contact with our European sister parties to explain and seek support for our position. Such a community method approach to Brexit politics is what is needed in these fraught times.”
