Green MEP for Dublin, Ciarán Cuffe, has called on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to respect the rights of consumers whose flights have been cancelled because of the Covid-19 crisis. Cuffe was responding to reports that Minister Ross is considering measures to allow airlines to give these passengers vouchers or credit notes in place of refunds.
Speaking today Ciarán Cuffe said: ‘’The Covid-19 crisis has brought the global economy to the brink of collapse. While I recognise that airlines and tourism operators are struggling, consumers are too. So many have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet due to reduced incomes.
‘’Under EU law passengers are entitled to a refund if their flight has been cancelled, although they can agree to a voucher if they so wish. Minister Ross should uphold this right as a refund could be crucial to a household’s income in these difficult times. I would urge him to comply with the guidelines issued by the European Commission on this matter which stress that consumers must be given the option of a refund.’’
