Flooding before high tide reveals an increasing risk from climate change to Galway – Greens

Pauline O’Reilly, Galway West councillor and Green Party candidate for the General Election said:

“The waves that hit Salthill took the council by surprise because the tide was over a metre lower than high tide. None of the government or non-government agencies monitoring this expected that such a low tide would result in such large waves.”

O’Reilly, who is chairperson of the Galway City strategic policy committee on climate action, added:

“The flood defences that we are putting in place over next year may not be able to cope with this type of unexpected flooding. The council is undertaking an analysis following Storm Elsa, however as things stand there is an increasing and significant risk for Galway from Climate Change; a risk that was not anticipated when this project began.”
