Cuffe: Housing Crisis is no Joke

BACK

The Green Party has called on Dublin City Council’s Chief Executive Owen Keegan to withdraw his comments made on RTÉ earlier where he said: “The best way to solve homelessness in Dublin would be to provide no beds.”

Councillor Ciarán Cuffe said: “The housing crisis in Dublin is no joke. 1,300 families and almost 3,000 children are living in emergency accommodation. This is a continuing nightmare for the vulnerable children and adults living  in emergency accommodation.

“Instead of jocular remarks Mr Keegan should be putting his staff on a wartime footing to address the worsening crisis in housing provision. Jocular remarks have no place in this debate.

“Too many people with a roof over their head have failed to comprehend the gravity of this crisis. Mr. Keegan must withdraw his remarks and redouble his efforts to provide homes.

“Keegan is right in saying that many people in homeless services have a range of complex problems. However he should be focusing on ensuring that an inter-agency approach happens, and that there is greater integration in the response from local authorities and other agencies.”
