Greens: A Nuanced Approach to Children and Families is Needed

BACK

Speaking after the launch today of the DCYA First 5 Strategy, Pauline O’Reilly, spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs for the Green Party said “A nuanced approach to children and families is required. The extension to maternity and paternity leave is to be commended but we must be aware that families are making various choices and this plan simply does not recognise that variety in community life.

“We heard this month that economist Dr. Helen Turon addressed the ESRI and said that no amount of policy will change the domestic choices that families make; yet this plan clearly values some family choices over others which has the potential to be divisive.

“Poverty in families cannot be addressed unless the choices made are respected, such as choosing childminders and family members to care for children.

“Additionally 25% of families are headed by lone parents and this plan needs to implement all of the recommendations of the 2017 Report of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection on Position of Lone Parents to provide for every aspect of the lives of lone parent families.”
