The Green Party have welcomed the re-opening of the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS). The scheme offers farmers payments of up to €220 per hectare a year during the conversion period and up to €170 per hectare when they have achieved full organic status.
Green Party Spokesperson for Agriculture, Heritage, and Food, Pippa Hackett: “We welcome the announcement today, it is long overdue, and we hope it will bode well for the future of the organic sector in Ireland, which still has one of the lowest percentages of land dedicated to organic farming in Europe.
“The organic market continues to grow both at home and abroad as consumers become ever more conscious about the environmental and animal welfare impacts of the food they choose to buy and eat.”
