Green Party put Climate Emergency Declaration front and centre in the Dáil

BACK

The debate this evening on an Oireachtas report on Climate Action paves the way for an historic declaration which would see Ireland become the second country in the world to declare a climate emergency.

Speaking ahead of the debate today Green TD for Dublin Rathdown and Deputy Leader Catherine Martin reiterated the Green Party’s call for the declaration of a climate emergency, highlighting the need for action rather than ‘gesture politics’, she said:

“The Government has to act now, declare a climate emergency and take concrete steps to change course on climate. Ireland is going to miss its climate goals and this will have devastating impacts for our environment, our planet and our children.

“While we consistently languish at the bottom of European League tables, Fine Gael engage in greenwashing at home and block important legislation like the Climate Emergency Measures Bill and our own Waste Reduction Bill.

“Our amendment seeking a climate emergency presents an opportunity to the Dáil to unite, take action and be counted. Future generations will certainly be counting on Government to act now to tackle the climate emergency.”
