Greens raise questions over Garda tactics following arrests at North Frederick Street protest

by Antoin McDermott
Green Party Justice spokesperson, Cllr. Roderic O’Gorman has questioned the tactics used by Gardai at a protest outside a vacant house that had been occupied on North Frederick Street. He was speaking in response to the arrest of six protesters by Gardaí wearing balaclavas. The arrests took place after all the protesters had left the building. All the protesters were subsequently released without charge.
It is alarming to see that a protest seeking to highlight the serious housing crisis in the city was policed in this manner. The protesters had left the property on North Frederick Street, in compliance with an injunction. The property was subsequently boarded up.”, stated Cllr. O’Gorman.
It is unsettling to see Gardai policing a protest in balaclavas. It sets out a highly confrontational tone and is the exact opposite of the openness and transparency in policing that we should expect from An Garda Síochána. The Gardaí must examine the tactics that have been employed here”, stated Cllr. O’Gorman.
