Patrick Costello was first elected to Dublin City Council in 2014, topping the poll in the Rathgar-Rathmines Ward. Patrick was re-elected to the council in the new ward of Kimmage-Rathmines, again topping the poll. Patrick was Chair of Dublin City Council’s Local Community Development Committee. Patrick was elected as TD for Dublin South Central this year, after a hard fought campaign and a long count!
Outside of politics Patrick has worked as a child protection social worker, working with young people at risk and their families. This is at the best of times a difficult job that involves working with those often struggling in marginalised communities. Before becoming a social worker Patrick worked in a variety of homeless and addiction services. Patrick has also volunteered in different youth work settings in the community and is currently a board member of CLAY youth project in Crumlin, and a member of 6th Dublin (Leeson Park) Scout Group.
Patrick has recently been appointed to be the party’s spokesperson for children, and will bring his frontline experience of child protection and youth work to the role, and used his maiden speech to raise the issue of missing supports for frontline child protection workers.
