Today I contacted survivors of the Mother and Baby Homes to inform them that the Final Report from the Commission of Investigation into the Mother and Baby Homes will be published on the week commencing 11th January 2021.
The publication of this report will be a significant milestone in the history of the State and will be the culmination of five years’ of investigation into the injustices that happened throughout Ireland in the 20th Century.
The Report makes a number of recommendations, all of which merit detailed consideration. We want to be in a position to respond to these as substantively as possible. That work is ongoing between Government Departments, and is at an advanced stage.
The Government’s response will take a survivor-centred approach, and I have been engaging with survivors, their advocates and survivor groups to ensure our response is based around the needs of survivors.
Former residents of these institutions have expressed a preference that the report not be published close to Christmas, and in keeping with their wishes, we have confirmed publication of the Report in January.
I know this report is widely anticipated, and I hope that its publication in the New Year, and the Government’s commitments, will assist the healing process for survivors and their families.
