Green Party Spokesperson for Justice, Patrick Costello TD, has called for reflection on the ongoing challenges around the globe for equality and justice for all on UN Human Rights Day. The focus of this year’s Human Rights Day is the need to build back better after the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure human rights are central to recovery efforts around the world.
“The ongoing pandemic only exacerbated this inequality and adversely affected those most vulnerable in our society. No more has this been evident than with the huge spike we have seen this year in cases of domestic abuse,” Deputy Costello said.
“The recent announcements of successful vaccine trials offer a light at the end of the tunnel, but we must put human rights and addressing inequality at the forefront of this transitional process as we look to the future. A just transition which addresses societal inequality and the climate crisis is the only avenue by which we can foster global solidarity and promote a truly sustainable future.”
“UN Human Rights Day offers us all an opportunity to reflect on the societies we live in and how we all as citizens can bring about long-lasting positive change for those most in need.”
