Report shows Direct Provision is failing people seeking international protection

BACK

Responding to the new report Origin and Integration: A Study Of Migrants in the 2016 Irish Census released today (June 4th) by the ESRI, Green Party Spokesperson on Justice and Equality Roderic O’Gorman TD, said:

“Today’s report from the ESRI once again shows that Direct Provision is failing people who come to Ireland seeking international protection.

“People in Direct Provision want to make a home and work here, yet this research suggests that time spent in Direct Provision increases the likelihood someone will be unemployed. The system is institutionalising disadvantage.

“The State needs to put supports in place to ensure that anyone making a home here can participate in Irish society to the fullest. This means the ability to participate in education and access a job.

“The report also raises significant concerns about discrimination faced by migrants, in particular black migrants. The last week has seen protests against racism grow across the world, and we must play our part in tackling the racism that still afflicts Irish society.”
