Situation in Carrickmacross direct provision centre ‘completely unacceptable’ – Greens

The Green Party have once again criticised Ireland’s direct provision system following reports that over 100 asylum seekers living in emergency accommodation at a hotel in Monaghan were shipped to Wexford in order to accommodate a wedding.

Green Party Spokesperson for Justice Cllr Roderic O’Gorman: “The treatment of the asylum seekers in this situation is absolutely shocking. The State pays millions annually to the providers of direct provision. The situation that happened in Carrickmacross is completely unacceptable. The Department of Justice should closely examine if this provider is suitable to continue to be engaged on a State contract.

“The overcapacity in the direct provision system, and the fact that more people are now being housed in emergency accommodation, again demonstrates that this entire system is failing. Four years ago, the McMahon Report was authored to try and improve conditions for people in direct provision. It appears that the situation for many is actually getting worse.”
