Success of Dutch climate case should be a lesson for Irish policy-makers

Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan said:

“This decision by the Dutch Supreme Court is the most significant success from the wave of climate litigation around the planet. The Irish Climate Case which is under appeal is part of that movement. The Dutch case, now confirmed by the Supreme Court, is the first time in the world that a citizens-led lawsuit has found a government has a legal duty to cut carbon emissions. Given the gravity of the warnings from the world’s climate scientists, it will probably be the first of many such decisions.

“The Dutch Supreme Court’s decision that the Netherlands must reduce emissions far more rapidly than the Government had planned should be a lesson to Irish policy-makers. The Dutch face similar emission challenges to Ireland, with high agricultural and transport emissions, and a need to close fossil-fuel fired electricity plants.”
