New figures provided to Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman show a total collapse in the number of bus shelters being built in Dublin.

The information provided to Deputy O’Gorman through a parliamentary question shows that only three bus shelters were built in Dublin in 2025. This compares to a figure of 37 in 2024, 30 in 2023 and 23 post-covid in 2022.

Deputy O’Gorman says:

“Bus shelters are the bare minimum that should be provided to commuters. But this Government can’t even manage that. In 2025, without the Green Party in government, only 3 new bus shelters were built across the entirety of Dublin City. That’s down from 37 the previous year. And this from the Government that promises 50,000 houses per year!”.

“There is a commitment in the Programme for Government to ensure that transport operators provide proper infrastructure for passengers, but just like other promises made by this government on public transport, it has fallen by the wayside”.

The information was contained in a reply to a question put to the Department of Transport following repeated requests by Green Party Councillor Oisin O’Connor to the NTA to provide bus shelters at busy stops where there was space to build them.

Cllr O’Connor says there is more that can be done:

"One supposed reason for delays is the slow planning process for each bus shelter. We need the government to stop being part of the problem and to speed up their delivery. I'm calling on the Minister for Housing to make bus shelters exempt from planning and for the Minister for Transport to hand over responsibility for bus shelter delivery to local authorities along with funding."
