The Green Party / An Comhaontas Glas has today announced that Roderic O’Gorman TD has been re-elected as Party Leader, and Cllr. Janet Horner has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of the Party.

Both candidates reached the required number of nominations to contest their respective positions — 50 for Party Leader and 30 for Cathaoirleach. As no other candidates reached the thresholds during the nomination period, a vote of the wider membership was not required.

The nominations were reviewed and verified by the Party’s Returning Officers, and subsequently ratified by the Green Party Executive Committee.

Green Party leader, Roderic O'Gorman TD said:

“I’m honoured that the Green Party membership have expressed this confidence in me to continue as leader. Our Party had a difficult election last year, but we continue to be a strong voice for climate action, for supporting families and for equality.

Since my re-election to Dáil Eireann, I have focused on the appointment of a new team of spokespersons and the development of a Strategic Plan for the Party. We are using the Strategic Plan process to listen, understand why we lost support in recent elections, and chart how we can rebuild our political strength, so we can continue to push for change.

I also want to congratulate Cllr Janet Horner on being elected as Cathaoirleach of the Green Party. Janet is a proven election winner and a leader in her community in the north city centre. I look forward to working with her in rebuilding Green Party representation all over the country," said Deputy O'Gorman.

Newly-elected Cathaoirleach of the Green Party, Cllr. Janet Horner said:

"I am really honoured to have the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Green Party. I am grateful to my colleagues who nominated, encouraged and supported me in going forward for the role. I don't take on the role lightly - I know we have a huge amount of work ahead of us. The climate crisis and the interconnected issues of social justice, equality and inclusion are growing ever more urgent and the Green Party are uniquely positioned to bring political solutions to the table for these.

The next couple of years will be focused on building and strengthening our membership and the party so we are ready to take back seats in the next local, national, NI Assembly and European elections and deliver meaningful solution-focused political change. I am really looking forward to working with our members across Ireland on this."

We extend our congratulations to Roderic and Janet as they take on these important roles at a crucial moment for the Green Party. We thank all members who engaged in the nominations process and look forward to the leadership continuing to build momentum for the Party’s vision in the months ahead.
