Charges against Budapest’s Mayor and our Green colleague Gergely Karácsony is an attack on LGBTQI+ rights

Green Party spokesperson on European Affairs and European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe said:

“Europe cannot remain silent. Today's attack by Victor Orbán on freedom of expression and LGBTQI+ rights in Hungary is outrageous. Orbán is scared of freedom and he is scared of democracy. I marched along with Roderic O'Gorman in Budapest Pride 2025 and it was a peaceful expression of solidarity and joy. It is outrageous that charges are being leveled at the city's Green Mayor Gergely Karácsony."

The Green Party/An Comhaontas Glas spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Cllr Janet Horner  added“Mayor Karácsony is facing a fine today, but it could be jail tomorrow. This is homophobia, and an attack on the human right to protest.

The Pride parade showed the strength of the people of Hungary standing against Orban. We need more politicians to show the defiance that Karácsony did when faced with regressive governments”
