Fianna Fáil tank housing supply (again!)
The Green Party says Fianna Fáil has again tanked housing supply, again.
Housing commencements have fallen by more than 76% year-on-year since the new government took office. The latest figures by the Central Statistics Office, show that in 2024, 69,311 houses were commenced. In 2025, just 16,413 were started.
Compared even to the average between 2021 and 2023, new houses started in 2025 are just half (54%) of what they were during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notably, one-off housing now comprises nearly a quarter of all housing developments (23%), compared to 9% in 2024 and averaged 16% during the pandemic 2021-2023.
Green Party councillor and party spokesperson on housing, Oliver Moran, said:
"This is a government that has given up on people. The signal is clear: you are now left to yourself, and the mercies of the market. The only thing that comes close to this is the last time Fianna Fáil tanked housing. Now, they've done it again in record time.
"Any other minister would resign. Not Fianna Fáil, the object is to profit from speculation, not delivery, and where is Browne this week: blaming Met Éireann for the weather. It's all a distraction. They've failed, utterly and reprehensively, but there will be no accountability. It's not their way, Fine Gael's way, or their gene-pool of 'independents'."
